In 2006 Kayla stepped into the optical industry and never looked back—blending her new skill as an optician with a knack for business and marketing she started shaking up local opticals in Boise, Idaho.
Kayla met Rook in 2014 where she was consulting with opticals, creating profitability tools with her sights on speaking on big stages. Her passion to create a solution for independent opticals was contagious. Rook saw the opportunity of what she was creating. In 2019 that passion led them to create what is now Spexy®.

As the visionary founder of Spexy, a certified optician, dynamic international speaker, and unapologetic optometric renegade, Kayla doesn’t just talk about change—she builds it. Kayla is known for shaking up the status quo with her direct, relatable, and results-driven approach to optical refinement.
Recognizing the need for real-world, high-impact training for eyecare teams, Kayla transformed her years of industry coaching into an engaging online learning experience now known as Spexy®. The Spexy team helps opticals improve both patient care and profitability by creating genuine, repeatable connections at every touchpoint.
Her solution driven spirit didn’t stop there—Kayla is also the creator of FrameTurn®, a proprietary tool that empowers independent opticals to optimize their frame inventory based on their own unique sales data. The result? Increased profitability, clear plan of action, and a smarter way to inventory frames.
Kayla’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. She was named one of Vision Monday’s Most Influential Women in Eyecare 2024, has been a regular contributor to Invision Magazine since 2021, and appeared on Invision Magazine’s April 2024 cover. In 2025, she received the Optical Women’s Association Emerging Leader Award and currently serves as Assistant Chair on the Optical Women’s Association Digital Marketing Committee.

I'm an Idaho girl, who grew up on a small 5-acre ranch.
HOW'D YOU GET INTO OPTICAL?
Because my mom faxed my resumé to an optical in 2006. I was addicted to the glasses sale immediately!

Listen you gotta try this: Highball glass with Amsterdam Grapefruit Vodka, fill it with tonic and squeeze a lime slice!

We have 4 kiddos. 2 have been mine since their birth, but 4 have my heart!

Madeline blends creative firepower with real-world optical experience to help shape the voice, energy, and impact of Spexy®. As an optician and former optical manager, she knows exactly what it takes to run a successful practice—and now she uses that knowledge to amplify Spexy’s mission and brand from the inside out.
Madeline’s journey in the eyecare world began in 2013 with a high school job shadow and college internship that sparked her curiosity. In 2017, she met Kayla Ashlee during a rep visit that would unknowingly become a full-circle moment in her career. Soon after, she stepped into a full-time optician role where Kayla trained her in lens sales, optical communication, and the art of selling glasses with confidence.
Her success led to a promotion to optical manager by 2019, where she got firsthand experience leading a team and managing the complexities of an independent practice—from inventory to staffing to patient experience.
When Spexy® launched, Madeline was already a superfan of the mission—and by 2022, she officially joined the team. Starting as Kayla’s part-time assistant, her creative talent and strategic mindset quickly made her indispensable. Today, she leads Spexy’s content, campaigns, and creative direction as Director of Marketing.
Madeline is known for her innovative ideas, eye for design, and deep understanding of what optical teams really need. Her motto? Make it brilliant, make it beautiful, make it Spexy.
